Best Fall Camping in Colorado by Mile Hi Rafting!
Mile Hi Rafting presents the best places to see Colorado’s famous fall colors in this 3 part series covering camping, day trips from Denver, and on ATV. We will tell you where to go and when to see them. Colorado is famous for fall Aspen trees and the changing colors with brilliant arrays of bright reds, oranges, and yellow. Each location, however, changes at differing times. Based on weather and time of year, there will be one week when each spot is at it’s prime. Some of the spots will over lap, but it will depend mostly on the weather. The destinations in today’s post are more than a few hours drive from Denver, providing the perfect weekend camping trip. Let’s visit the best camping spots in Colorado to view the fall colors!
Independence Pass and Leadville in the San Isabel National Forest provide the perfect weekend camping destination to view the fall colors. Southern Railroad, a popular train, climbs the Continental Divide through thick aspen groves. Early viewing begins in September for this location, although the colors peak in early October and by late October will be diminished. Many camping spots are available in and around Leadville, including the Twin Lakes region, and Buena Vista.
Telluride is a decent drive from Denver, taking about 6 to 7 hours, however, this trip is a must. Hoem to one of the most popular aspen viewing areas, the canyon and valleys surrounding Telluride are bursting in color from the altering Aspens amidst the evergreens. Several hikes in town will take you on a loop through several groves and even water falls. This quaint little mountain town will not disappoint!
