When heading into the backcountry, taking the time to pack the right things is a great habit that is quite important.
What to Bring on Your Next Hike
Make sure you bring everything you need on your next hiking or camping trip. Even if you consider some of them to be unnecessary, you can be sure that the moment you actually need them, you’ll be glad you brought them with you.
The Right Footwear
One of the most important things you want to make sure you get right is the shoes you’re bringing on your hike. Trail shoes are great for regular hikes, and hiking boots might be better for longer hikes and more technical terrains.
A map, compass, or GPS device can certainly become your best friend during these trips. They help you identify where you are and how far you have to go, as well as locating emergency exits, campsites, and even water. If you’re bringing a GPS, don’t discard the least techy devices. The map and compass are good to have as a backup.
Safety Items & First Aid Kit
Nobody wants to get lost, but if it were to happen, you don’t want to be caught off-guard. A whistle is nice to have if you need to call for help. Bring something you can start a fire with, too. Fire is another good way to signal for help, and it has other benefits like allowing you to roast marshmallows and make yourself some hot chocolate to keep you warm. Consider packing a knife. It’s a pretty useful tool that can serve many purposes. Another must-have is a first-aid kit. Don’t walk out the door without it. Of course, if you have basic first aid knowledge, that’s even better.
Be prepared for whatever the weather might bring and always carry extra clothes with you, along with more than enough food and snacks (and cooking gadgets, if needed), plenty of water, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
