How to Stay Safe During Hail Storms?

Weather can be unpredictable. Just a few weeks ago, Colorado experienced a series of hailstorms that had everyone’s head spinning. Hail causes around $1 billion in damage every year. Of course, depending on the size of the hail, hailstorms could have more or less damaging effects. One thing is certain, though, if it can severely affect buildings, homes, properties, and vehicles, it could really harm you if a hailstorm catches you in the middle of the great outdoors.

Maybe you’ve been through it before but hopefully, you haven’t. However, it could happen. You could be in the middle of a great camping trip or a beautiful hike, and suddenly, a hailstorm hits. Here are some safety tips in case you’re ever caught outdoors in a hailstorm:

Before You Leave

Always Be Aware

Ideally, before you even step foot out the door, you should check the weather forecast. Although, at times, weather can be tricky to predict, checking out the forecast is always helpful.

Carry a First Aid Kit

Never leave the house without a first aid kit. You never know when you’ll need it.

How to Stay Safe During Hail Storm
If there’s no place to shelter you, cover your head with your backpack.

While in the Outdoors

Find Shelter Immediately

The moment you realize a hailstorm is happening, find a place to shelter you. If you are unable to locate a place where you can protect your whole body, find something or somewhere that will shelter your head. Hail comes in all sizes, and if it hits you, it could really hurt.

Stay Away from Trees

Don’t stay under a tree, as you could actually get hurt by doing that. Trees could lose branches as hail hits them, which could end up hurting you. Also, tree branches tend to attract lightning.

Don’t Get Too Close to Areas Prone to Flooding

Stay at a safe distance from main water sources, like rivers and springs. The areas around them could potentially flood during storms.
