These Home Actions Can Help Protect Our Rivers

Some people might feel like small actions don’t count, but if we all followed specific guidelines at home that could help protect our rivers or the environment in general, the world would be a different place.

When you book a white water rafting trip, you get to enjoy the amazing beauty of rivers like Clear Creek and the Arkansas River, as well as the surrounding areas. Would you like your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren to be able to enjoy them, too? If so, there are some actions you can take from the comfort of your home to protect our rivers:

Do Full Loads of Laundry and Dishes

Turning on the dishwasher for just a few dishes is not ideal. Not only will you be wasting electricity, but you will also be wasting water. Same thing with the washing machine. Instead of doing small loads, do full loads. The higher the volume of clothes, the less water will be used.

Protect Colorado Rivers from HomeChoose Biodegradable Cleaning Products

The chemicals in regular cleaning products get washed down the drain and eventually end up in the rivers. When choosing cleaning and body products, go for earth-friendly and biodegradable options as much as possible.

Be Mindful of Your Use of Water

Instead of letting the water run while you brush your teeth, fill up a cup, and turn off the water. This will minimize waste as clean water won’t be running straight down the drain while you finish brushing. Also, cut back on your shower time as much as you can. Did you know that when showering, 5 gallons of water is used per minute?

Cut Back on Electricity Wherever Possible

This doesn’t mean you have to live in the dark. Just make sure you turn off the lights when not in use and also unplug chargers as soon as your battery is full. These little things can make a difference in how much energy you consume. Water is needed to cool down thermal power plants used to produce energy.

Sort Your Waste or Recycle

Instead of throwing out trash all together, sort it, and recycle. Also, minimize the use of garbage disposals. This can prevent waste from ending up in the rivers.

To enjoy the wonders of nature, we need to care for it. Little changes do make a difference.
