If you like nature as much as we do, camping always sounds like a great idea! There’s just something special about losing yourself in the wilderness. Allow us to paint you a picture: dark, starry nights, away from the noise of the city, cold air, warm fire, roasted marshmallows… What’s not to like, right? Even though it might be tempting to just pack up a few basic things, along with a tent, and a sleeping bag, and get on the road, there are some safety tips you need to take into account before you head out into the woods.
Camping Safety Tips
While you’re getting ready to enjoy the outdoors, it’s good to remember that camping comes with some inherent dangers that you normally don’t have to worry about in the city. Here are a few tips to help you stay safe on your next trip.
Preparation is Key
It isn’t uncommon that you pack your bag and once you leave the house, you start thinking of all the things that you should have brought along but didn’t. Make sure to, at least, take these with you:
- First Aid Kit (include allergy medications)
- Rope and tarps
- Lantern or flashlight
- Lots of water
- Suitable clothing (comfortable and weather appropriate)
- Sunscreen and bug spray
- Pocket knife
Travel with company
It’s best that you don’t wander off alone. It’s much easier to get through an emergency if you have someone with you. If you decide to go hiking, inform someone about it or leave a detailed copy of your itinerary with a responsible person. Bring your maps, compass, and GPS along.
Remember You’re Not Alone
There will be all kinds of wild animals around you, even if you don’t see them. Don’t approach them. You are in their habitat, so respect that. Watch your step. Look out for snakes, spiders, and other critters, as well as bees and wasps. Keep your campsite clean to avoid attracting bears.
